I wanted to give a simple honest review of Krita, a free software that advertises itself as for painting but also has a kickass animation timeline. Finding a fave animation software I actually feel comfortable in has been like chasing after a mirage in a desert. I got used to hand-drawn in Adobe Animate about a year or 2 ago because I lost my Tvpaint dongle from my school days and refuse to spend money on a another one. If you can’t tell I am a hand-drawn purist, so I am recommending Krita for animators who really wanna do pure hand-drawn no tweening tricks here.
The biggest cons I notice with Krita for animating…
–Modules will move way to easily, when you’re just trying to scrub timeline! As an animator you want to feel out the motion, but in trying to grab the small ‘scrubbing’ area, I often un-dock the timeline. Argh.
–May unpredictably crash. This is just as much an issue in Adobe Animate. Annoying, but nothing autosave and Ctrl+S trigger finger can’t fix. – Cant easily copy-paste onto same layer easily.
– I had a bug with Brush bundles creating a bunch of wacky temp-files, but I work around it by not messing with saving too many brushes. It might just be my computer, Maybe not everyone will get this issue.
But here are the pros… -Brushes are as good as photoshop. Hard round is all you need. It really helps me enjoy drawing and focus on building up forms, what I’ve needed to work on in my art for ages. n n;
-Awesome timeline and layer system. This makes it leagues better that Photoshop and CC Animate. Its easy to have different elements and lock layers – its free! WOW, toss the developers some money.
Here I animated my fave boys Ryuunosuke and Gilles from Fate/Zero. Yeah, I’m a bit obsessed with them, I find their nasty evil charisma really intoxicating and fun to draw, I think still image fanart isn’t enough for me anymore haha.
For this reason, I will forever preach the benefits of drawing fanart, when the artist is creating scenarios and working within the constraints of existing characters.
I hate the feeling of being stagnant in art. But often when I become painfully aware of my inability to convey what I want, I suddenly will make a massive improvement towards what I want to work on. That’s the best advice I can give to any artist, be critical but kind…use awareness of your weaknesses to push yourself to be better!! And un-apologetically draw whatever horrible things you want to in your free time honestly lol.
I moved back to Adelaide last November-ish for anyone who doesn’t follow me elsewhere. This year I’m gonna stop trying to push my self in a billion different ways with art and just do more fun little illustration/doodles and animations that makes me happy. Health matters a heck of a lot too, I’m really into Vinyasa yoga. That’s all I have to say, here’s a dump.

A little rambling update on my film progress.
It’s been a little tough finding time to work on my project this last month. I’ve actually been trying to manage my intensity of working on my film just because I do better work when I give myself breaks. On the plus side I’m on the last stretch of animating!! Polishing up 85+ backgrounds pieces to my liking however, will be a whole new level of perfectionism for me.
I’m really glad that people like the animation clips Iv’e shared, but I’m going to probably share less until it’s finished. This is just because the way I work involves jumping all over the place. Nothing is ever truly as polished as it could be until I get absolutely sick of it. I like to see how each scene correlates to others, even from when they are still just rough storyboards. Keeping characters palettes consistent (bless tagged swatches in Animate), making backgrounds consistent, making characters interact with things/others…etc. I was not prepared for the unending list of challenges that have arisen after working on this. Oh, and animating chains, yes I have attempted to sloppily animate chains. I want to write a more coherent post on all the thoughts that have blipped through my head through making this, but I’ll save that for after I’m done and deserve time to contemplate on it! WordPress is a more constructive and thoughtful place for me to share my thoughts, as opposed to social media, eck.
I also have a tendency to get distracted staying up past midnight making clouds and stars move or adding particles in After Effects, often when I have to be up for work the next morning*. I forget it’s an approximately 2 second long shot that people will probably only watch once and shrug at. *Yeah that’s what I mean about managing stress mostly, getting enough sleep.
I see a lot of artists online preaching about ‘setting deadlines’ and ‘finishing what you start’. Yeah yeah, preach on. For me this has been about the journey of making more of my own animations, in my own style, in my own idiosyncratic ways. I realised long ago that you can’t just sit around twiddling your thumbs waiting for a guardian angel to float down to bless you with a sweet salary in order to animate your OCs. Life is so short, just make things and block out the excuses some people use to not create. Meeting deadlines for a living is stressful yes. Life is big fat stressy. That’s why it’s great to just work on something at your own pace and explore a multitude of ideas through making it. Also, I still haven’t gotten YouTube Partnership advertising whatnot sorted, so I’ll worry about finishing content once I have that.
It’s daunting to start to see the light at the end of the tunnel for this project. All I can hope is when I’m done with it, all the effort I’ve put into every frame is at least mildly fun for people to watch.

I had a table at Supanova Sydney this last weekend! Drawing caricatures is one thing I love to do at conventions. I draw these with ink and copic markers in about 10 minutes, it’s always a fun challenge. In my style, they are more like ‘portraits’ but it regardless of what word I use, I basically just draw people my way. Here are some of my personal favorites!
