Labyrinth + other things.

I did some quick watercolor film studies of Labyrinth (1986) out of nostalgia. Painting has always been a massive challenge for me, let alone color, but I feel like I’ve improved my eye for color lately.

Also I started filling out this spread a couple of days ago, and only when I came back to it I noticed the David Bowie prompt. We’ll, sketching is the least I can do to commemorate him and his work right?

642 Things to Draw

Awhile ago I stumbled across a cool book called 642 Things to Draw. It’s basically what it sounds like, 600+ prompts for things to draw. I uncovered it while cleaning out my old condo over the holidays. I thought it was about time I made a habit out of tackling this book.

Overall the variety of prompts leave room for some fun storytelling challenges. You’re only limited by what you choose to draw within the frame. It’s nice that some of the panels are rectangular and almost to a storyboard ratio. I feel it’s important to not get ‘stale’ in the subject matter of what you draw, so part of my new (years) goal is to draw a bigger variety of people, places and things. Oh and not to mention work on my storytelling skills, composition and yada yada story artist lingo.

Sitting in the Melbourne airport pouring over this book makes me feel like a kid scribbling in an activity book all over again. It’s surprisingly entertaining to just see where a word prompt & your imagination can lead you.  I should try being bored more often.

Supanova sum-up & future events

So I tabled in the Artist Alley at Supanova Adelaide this last weekend! Weirdly enough, it was way busier on the Sunday compared to the Saturday. I blame the ACDC concert on the Saturday ;). I didn’t have a super huge amount of new things to sell this year because ever since June, my year has been jam packed with Pixar internship and starting a new job. The volunteers at Supanova were very friendly and it was especially nice that they have a system for ordering lunches.

Some of my shiny things

My next lineup of events include Adelaide Night Market on November 29th and December 13th. I’m focusing on just caricature drawing at these next events and will probably apply for the rest of this seasons’ night markets. With holidays approaching I’m putting aside artist alley until the next big Aussie ones in 2016.  I’m also considering Auckland Armageddon since I’ve had so many lovely New Zealanders asking me if I plan on doing a con in NZ again.

As always I’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who came by my tiny corner of the alley and bought something from me. I’m always open to new suggestions for the types of products I should make. Making people happy with my art keeps me going after all!
